Michelle 42 (Diagnosed at 41)

Please finish the following sentence: "Sjögren's has taught me...":
The future is uncertain, so make the most of every moment! Live life to the fullest and cherish the time you have.

What are your most difficult symptoms?:
Sjögren's has taken a toll on my eyes. Some days, opening them feels like a struggle, and a gritty sensation, like sand, plagues them constantly. The redness and irritation make even basic tasks a challenge. Sjögren's has also impacted my lungs, making breathing challenging at times.

How has Sjögren's impacted your life (either physically, emotionally, financially)?:
Sjögren's has undeniably reshaped my outlook on life, in a surprisingly positive way. Every six months, I undergo screenings for enlarged lymph nodes, a constant reminder of life's unpredictable nature. But this diagnosis has also gifted me a profound appreciation for each day and every moment I have.

How do you effectively cope with the complexity of symptoms?:
I manage Sjögren's through a combination of strategies: regular checkups, consistent medication use, therapeutic gel eye drops, prioritizing rest, and minimizing exposure to wind, heat, and other triggers. I also see a therapist to help cope with the anxiety that comes along with it. To address the accompanying anxiety, I also incorporate therapy into my routine.

What do you wish people knew about your Sjögren’s?:
The initial Sjögren's diagnosis was overwhelming. Rampant symptoms left me feeling my worst, battling fear, anxiety, and depression. But with the help of exceptional doctors, consistent follow-ups, and dedicated research, I've gained control of my symptoms and reclaimed a relatively normal life. It's a continuous challenge, each day presenting new experiences. However, with the unwavering support of loved ones, a fantastic medical team, and invaluable support groups, I navigate this journey one day at a time. With the right support system and a proactive approach, you can take control of your condition and reclaim your life, one day at a time. There is hope, and you are not alone.

How do you incorporate self-care with managing Sjögren's?:
Prioritize rest when your energy wanes, and don't hesitate to say no when your well-being needs it. Remember, bad days are inevitable, and allowing yourself to cry and feel down is perfectly okay. But like all storms, this too shall pass, leaving you stronger and more prepared for sunshine.

What is your go-to Sjögren's product?:
Systane Lubricant Eye Gel Drops, I would be absolutely unable to function without these!

 What’s your best Sjögren’s tip?:
Knowledge is power! Do your research! Researching Sjögren's empowers you to better understand this disease, identify symptoms, make informed lifestyle choices, and ultimately, improve your quality of life. Consider joining a support group. Sharing your experiences with others who understand can be incredibly comforting and help you feel less alone on this journey.
